Trench 96 Discussion

Trenches 96 & 35, 29 are part of Complex D on Hicks map. Caches are predominantly Early Postclassic. Burials are likely located beneath floor of houses. Period 4 is likely Early Postclassic Period. Note on oriention of burials - described as head to foot, e.g., north to south indicates that the head was to the north, feet to the south. Period 1 -4 are described in Hicks manuscript (2005) as architectural periods, not necessarily chronological periods (e.g., Period 3 and 4 could both be Early Postclassic; we are still reviewing field notes).


TR 96 Burial 96-1

Burial: Possibly young adult or adolescent, disturbed burial.

Structure: Complex D.

Provenience: 96K7B.

Chronological Position: Early Postclassic - Period 4

Note: Dog and bird bones mixed with scattered remains, beneath floor of large room.


TR 96 Burial 96-2

Burial: child (ca. 12 years old), flexed dorsal, oriented north to south. Hole in skull likely resulting from trephination.

Structure: Complex D.

Provenience: 96L7 (no level).

Chronological Position: Early Postclassic - Period 4

Note: no objects; organic layer under body. Beneath floor of large room.

Burial: child, aged 6-10, probably laying on right side, head to west; disturbed burial.

Structure: Complex D.

Provenience: 96K7 (no level).

Note: fabric or other organic layer under body; many sherds with bones; burial beneath floor of large room.
